The polo shirt belongs to Grace Energy, the parent company that owns the Fastrip chain. He's wearing clothes that conform to the Fastrip employee dress code: black shoes, khaki slacks, and a green polo shirt with a little name tag pinned onto it. He plans to resume work at the Fastrip when it reopens. "Everybody back, back, back, way back!" he says. Ruben orders the newcomers to join the others crouched against the back wall, using words that, in another context, could have been the lyrics to a disco song. The power went out several minutes ago, and though the sun should still be shining, the storm has blotted it out. When Ruben stops leaning into the door, the wind slams it shut.Įxcept for the wan and skittery illumination of a few cell-phone screens and the intermittent flash of lightning, the inside of the store is very dark. A father and three children stagger through the opening, slipping and almost falling on the wet tiles. The accelerating wind shoves back, but Ruben wins out. Since he doesn't have much authority over the muscles of his arms, he pushes this door like he pushes most doors, shoving with the weight and strength of his entire body. When he reaches the door, he unlocks it, then pushes forward. He could cover the distance without support, but his cerebral palsy, the damage to the parts of his brain that control his coordination and balance, would make him do so with his usual stiff plod, and there is no time for that. You have my number. As he rushes from the rear to the front of the store, Ruben Carter leans on the half-moon cash-register island with his left hand, using the island as a sort of crutch and springboard to propel himself along. You do realise that this applies to you too, right? Don't be so goddamn hypocritical - you know you can't be out volunteering 24-hours a day (though, I'm not quite sure how much you have volunteered) and the OP should also have those same expectations of himself (AS SHOULD ANYONE!).įeel free to bitch at me via text. Please get off of the internet and go find a way to help the people that really need it right now. Anything to keep them away from the imagery at this point is encouraged, even if that means venting or rehashing events on a blog. PTSD is a serious issue I've been handling in my office - many of the victims, while physically unhurt, are emotionally devastated. I believe I told you the story of the nurse that had her neighbourhood destroyed this individual returned to volunteer (only after she was OK'd by Red Cross) and was placed on "body bag duty" because she was a medical professional. The individuals being pulled out of the rubble were mostly taken care of by qualified individuals. There were people still being pulled out of rubble for days afterwards. I'm from the area that was destroyed last month in Alabama. Until the proper entities have "swept" through the area, people are encouraged not to endanger themselves. It is extremely, extremely dangerous right now. I'm fairly certain at this point the national guard and state troopers have positioned themselves in neighbourhoods to disallow entry from non-residents and/or individuals looking to return to their devastated homes. WHICH MEANS unaffiliated volunteers (common citizens like the OP) are HIGHLY recommended not to jump in and help. You're right, it has been less than 24-hours since the tornado hit. Just because an individual isn't critically physically injured does not mean they aren't going through emotional and mental distress. I'm glad you weren't injured, but dude, you need to get your priorities straight. You did sound like an asshole, and your preambled apology is kind of silly as it doesn't seem genuine in any regard. I'm probably going to sound like an asshole here, so I apologize in advance. Okay, so, I know we have already had a text message discussion regarding this, but I didn't realise how much of an ass you actually sounded in your post.
